Copy of Your Tax Return - How to Get One

This is archived information that pertains only to the 2001 Tax Year. If you
are looking for information for the current tax year, go to the Tax Prep Help Area.

If you need an exact copy of a previously filed, and processed return, you must file Form 4506 (PDF). For copies, there is a $23.00 fee for each tax period requested. For transcripts there is no charge. It can take up to 60 calendar days to get a copy of a tax return.

For information on obtaining W-2's, refer to Tax Topic 154. Form 4506 can also be used to get proof from the IRS that you did not file a return by checking Box 8B.

A Tax Return Transcript is available only for returns in the 1040 series, such as Form 1040 (PDF), Form 1040 A (PDF), Form 1040 EZ (PDF), and so forth. It shows line items from the original return. In most cases, a transcript will meet the requirement for lending institutions, for purposes of student loans, etc. It takes about 10 work days (after the IRS receives your request) to obtain a transcript.

If you need a "statement" of your tax account showing changes that you or the IRS made to the original return, request "Tax Account Information". To request "Tax Account Information" which shows payments and later tax adjustments or "Tax Return Transcript", write or visit an IRS office or call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040.
